10 Key Points

Transfers cost points.  Don't do more than one in a game week unless you absolutely have to.

Avoid having two players from the same team in the same position as it could risk points.*
 
Only use your wild card as a final resort, i.e. bad form or too many injuries and suspensions.

If you're looking to buy a popularly selected or in-form player do so quickly before his price rises.
 
If you're looking to sell a popular selected or out-of-form player do so quickly before his price falls.

Primarily buy from good clubs - logic dictates that the better teams score more and concede less.

Try having a strong bench, especially during a busy fixture period as it will save you points.

When picking a captain try choosing from a midfielder or forward as they tend to pick up more pts.

If your sub goalkeeper is almost as good as your first choice you could lose points on the bench.

Check your team regularly & remember there is no harm to pick/transfer players based on fixtures.

*The only exception being during a double game week (DGW) when a team plays more than once or if two players in tandem from the same team are having a fantastic run of form.

Squad Selection

First XI Goalkeepers

When it comes to goalies my advice is to keep it nice and simple.  Buy one from a good team with a solid defense.  Alternatively, if you are on a shoestring budget, buy a good goalie from a 5th-10th placed team or defensive mid-table team.  Remember, the more expensive a goalie is, the more likely they are to be from a good team and/or to keep a clean sheet.  Try and avoid buying players from squad rotating teams or players who often don't start or get subbed off regularly.

Reserve Goalkeepers

For your reserve goalie don't bother purchasing anyone too expensive, it's a waste of transfer money.  Try and buy a sub-5.0 keeper or the cheapest on the market, ideally one that plays regularly and can alternate well with your main keeper.

First XI Defenders

It doesn't matter what team they play in, provided that they are attack minded.  Remember you get extra points from defenders that provide assists and score goals!  The chances are that the better teams will keep more clean sheets, which means more points from Defenders.  But this is not enough.  You need to have defenders in teams who can go up to the other half for set pieces (taking free kicks/corners or being involved) and have the luxury of pushing forward on a regular basis.  Try and avoid buying players from squad rotating teams or players who often don't start or get subbed off regularly.  

Reserve Defenders

For your fifth/reserve defender it would be advisable to pick the cheapest priced playeravailable (even if they are injured or rarely play), usually valued at 4.0 or less.  This would free up funds to buy better players in other positions.

First XI Midfielders

You need to buy those players that have direct presence and influence to score or assist goals.  Unfortunately these will be the most expensive players on the market.  As a result  You may opt to buy average midfielders with a view to invest in good defenders and forwards.  But I would advise that at the very least buy two decent midfielders who regularly score or assist goals.  They may be central midfielders or attacking midfielders.  They are rarely defensive midfielders who don't score or assist as much as their other midfield counterparts.  Remember to buy from midfielders from teams who are regularly scoring goals and are generally attack minded, as the lower teams may not score as much.  Try and avoid buying players from squad rotating teams or players who often don't start or get subbed off regularly.

Reserve Midfielders

For your reserve midfielder(s) it would be advisable to pick the cheapest priced player available (even if they are injured or rarely play), usually valued between 5.0-5.5.  In the same vein as having a cheap reserve defender, this would free up funds to buy better players in other areas or allow funds to purchase a highly prized midfielder.

First XI Forwards

FPL is all about points which are best gained from goals.  The best ones don't come cheap.  When it comes to your three forwards, you need to buy at least two who score regularly with one mediocre forward that warms the bench.  Alternatively buy three regular scoring forwards by taking funds out from other positions.  You will get days when the most expensive scorers will not score and the cheapest ones will.  But probability says this will not often be the case.  Thus, go big and invest in decent forwards from the best teams.

Reserve Forwards

As with reserve goalies, defenders and midfielders go for the cheapest options at hand.  Unlike the other positions, don't just buy someone that is cheap and injured.  Buy someone that will get sufficient game time.
